IPL Red Thread Vein Treatments

Red thread veins (also known as spider veins or spider naevi) are tiny, damaged veins in the skin itself. They appear as red, purple, or blue lines, often in the form of thin branches or spider cobwebs – hence their name.

They are very common and appear on the face and body. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment is a safe, precise, and effective way of treating them with minimal effect on the surrounding skin. The earlier you start treatment, the easier it is to remove them.

Eden Skin Clinics offer IPL treatment for thread veins. Book a consultation with one of our IPL specialists here…

What to expect at your IPL Thread Vein treatment

Initial thread vein consultation

At your initial consultation one of our skincare experts will examine you, discuss the treatment options with you and carry out a test skin patch. This test is for your well-being and we cannot treat you without it.

You can book an appointment as soon as 48 hours after the skin patch test. If you need more than one IPL treatment for your red veins then we leave 4 weeks between each appointment.

It is important to avoid the sun during IPL treatment and for 30 days afterwards, so if you are going on holiday please let us know at your initial consultation and we can plan around it.

Our IPL equipment can treat skin types 1-4 on the Fitzpatrick classification (4 being light brown skins which tans easily and burns minimally). If you are extremely tanned we will wait until your tan has faded and carry out a further patch test.

At your IPL spider vein appointment

IPL treatments for spider (thread) veins are quick, and a small area usually takes just 20 minutes including preparing the skin pre-treatment and aftercare procedures.

First, we cleanse with a gentle cleanser using tepid water to remove makeup, then apply a room temperature ultra-sound gel to the skin. You will also be asked to wear protective eye goggles.

Clients usually describe IPL as uncomfortable, rather than painful, saying the treatment is similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin for a brief second with a feeling of warmth. Occasionally clients feel a sunburn or wind burn sensation which is short lived.

The IPL treatment itself only lasts a few minutes. We then apply a soothing room temperature aloe vera gel. Finally, we apply a sunscreen. Avoiding sun exposure during and after IPL treatment is essential, so always wear a high SPF, and if you are outside we recommend you wear a hat and seek out the shade.
